LG Extravert Sound Issue

Purchased an LG Extravert phone, and the issue might be simply a setting.  When placing a call you cannot hear a ring on the connecting call, or voicemail on a potentially missed call, unless you have the speaker on.  If Speaker On is enabled, you can hearing ringing, etc. If the other party answers, the earpiece works fine.  I thought perhaps a bluetooth or hands free issue, but I'm not seeing how to correct it.
