So I see the ICON is no longer being offered in the store and there is a post by a rep that it was discontinued. WTF Verizon?
First you don't even mention anything about an update you said you'd give and now you discontinue the device entirely? There are a lot of customers that got the device with your promises of an update in the near future and now instead of an update, you discontinue the device?

I don't see it in the online shop either. I wonder if they ran out of inventory and waiting for new stock without the Nokia name? I don't see any articles or announcements mentioning it being discontinued.

This makes no sense at all. I moved from AT&T to Verizon specifically because they had the Lumia Icon. This cannot be the case.

I'm curious, what does that have to do with switching carriers?

I was on AT&T with iPhone 5s. Needed to go to Verizon do to coverage issue after moving to NH. That's when Icon came out. Sold 5S for very good price and made the jump to Verizon and Icon.

I wanted a 1520, but since AT&T has the exclusive rights on it (a dirty deal, as far as I'm concerned, since I was and still am on Verizon), and since AT&T's service is horrible, as much as I lusted after the 1520, even its majesty could not get me to switch to AT&T just for that phone. So the best thing I could get was the Icon. If it's not even going to get more updates, this means I'm apparently screwed.
I like to use phones for a long time -- until they no longer serve my needs. My old phone was the LG enV 3. I had mostly used it as just a phone, calendar and text message device, but then I had more of a need for mobile web-browsing. I was getting notifications on certain pages: "This web page is too large and therefore will not be loaded." So it was time to move on.
So this Icon, even as it is, is a great phone. But I've heard that 8.1 is better and 8.1.1 is even better than that. I personally believe that it's just a good business practice to support an update the Icon for as long as they still have people under contract with the device. If they even discontinue support and updates for this, I consider that a dirty business practice. I cannot accuse Verizon of anything until something official comes out, saying, "We are not going to update the Lumia Icon anymore. Support has been discontinued." But I doubt that will ever happen. It's more likely that updates may never come and nothing official will ever be said about it. Contracts will expire and people will probably forget about it and accept the shaft they got.

I purchased a Lumia 1520 unlocked international version for my wife. We use it on T-Mobile and it works great. No contact to worry about either and lower prices. It's better than the AT&T version because it has 32GB plus QI wireless charging. You can get it from B&H Photo or Newegg. I got ours from B&H. I think that's the way to go because you don't have to deal with contracts.

Lots of people do... You assume no one does... I was just leaving my positive experience with having an unlocked phone and no contract and not having to deal with Verizon on an endless wait for updates.

No I don't. I'm not stupid. I do know they ignore 1/4 of the US and of the 3/4 they do serve much of that is still on edge or just poor reception.

I just got back from a trip in the middle of no where and had 4g the whole time on T-Mobile so it really depends on where you travel. I've been places where Verizon had no coverage. Since you don't need a contract on T-Mobile you can cancel anytime. Then since the international Lumia 1520 has all the bands for at&t you could pop in one of their pre-paid sims or any of the other low cost carriers that utilize att or T-Mobile networks. Not much to lose in trying T-Mobile. On the other had Verizon is ignoring customers (worse than ignoring areas of the US like you said in my opinion). Verizon ignores our request to get WP 8.1 released and most users are stuck in a contract with no option to use another carrier with the icon device.

At least AT&T knows how to release Windows Phone Updates, T-Mobile encourages BYOD, and Verizon LOL I guess they have good coverage and nothing else. Can you hear me know? I guess that's all they care about.

Actually I consider coverage #1 in a mobile data and phone service.

I have a fraking feeling this is indeed the case. They don't want to update it so they retire it instead. I bought mine on the Edge plan the first of March. I cannot do anything until next March or when I have half of it paid for. I waited for the Icon specifically because I like Nokia and everything seemed to indicate that it was made for WP 8.1. In fact, if MS hadn't held WP8.1 so long I am confident it would have been on there by default. A large portion of the rest of the world now has WP8.1. Developers are updating their apps to 8.1 only. Where does that leave the 8.0 users? SOL I guess.
You know, I would switch to another carrier if I could but unfortunately Verizon is the best in this area. I would have dropped calls daily with AT&T; not so with Verizon. T-Mobile and Sprint are worse. I like to say that just because you are better than your competition, it doesn't mean that you are the best or any good. It just means you are not as bad as your competition. My recent experiences with Verizon have lowered my satisfaction with them.
I know that Verizon doesn't have to give us the update. I know that they could care less about me despite the extra $100 per month they are getting from me when I upgraded. But come on, this phone was basically made for 8.1 and it was the only real WP phone they had. It is not like they have to test and release updates for a dozen phones. How difficult is it to do something that should be so simple? I spend my life working writing software so I am not quite ignorant about what these kind of things take. Unless Nokia really botched the firmware upgrade, I can't imagine it taking more than 1 week to fully test on their network. It isn't like it is new technology. Let me put it this way: if I was in charge (i know, i'm not, but) and you took this long to test a phone (assuming you actually did), you would have a lot of explaining to do to keep your job. So stop blowing smoke and let us know your plans.

I bought my Icon on the Edge program too, in April. And now its discontinued or 'retired' as they say? I'd hop carriers to AT&T over it but we have 8 lines at present. Three I can drop in November but I'm still tethered by the other contracts.
So if there is going to be no support for the Icon I may have to leave the WP platform which really ticks me off. It is SO much better than Android and I've never been a fan of Apple.
Verizon I am so, SO disappointed in you. You will not get any further recommendations from me to friends and family and as my family's remaining lines expire, we will not be renewing those contracts. So that's 8 lines in one account you are losing over this. Not that you care.

This all appears to be a rumor, with no confirmation by Verizon. My Icon is the best phone I have had so it does not make sense what I am reading. Also, it is not the best for Verizon to be reliant on only Apple or Samsung for most of its sales. That could be a huge mistake. So I think that they will support the Icon. My guess.

I'm not expecting Verizon to answer your post, I haven't seen a single legitimate response in all these threads about 8.1/Cyan from an official Verizon rep - "more info soon, sign up for our spam" is not a legitimate response. They might keep the Windows forum open just to give the suckers like me someplace to vent, but it's obvious Verizon does not market Windows Phones any longer, and are actively discouraging their purchase. Very unfortunate, I really like my Icon.
