My phone is stuck on the HTC Screen alternating with the Verizon Wireless Screen

After attempting an update, in which my phone got stuck for about 30 minutes on step #7, I removed the phone, took out the battery and attempted to reconnect. Now my computer doesn't recognize the device and it's stuck on the HTC screen, alternating with the VW screen. I have removed and replaced the battery 5 times. The phone is completely unusable. Help!
