Problem with special characters in text messages

Is there a Verizon network compatibility issue with how HTC Trophy encodes special characters in text messages? If I send a text in a foreign language (for example, using Russian alphabet), it comes across as underlines or square boxes. A friend with an Android phone on Verizon network can do it just fine (and I get their messages without problems) as do people on other networks (e.g. iPhone on ATT).

Yeah, for me, too. The latest update didn’t fix it, either. Really, really annoying if you speak any language other than English. See this old post of mine:
