I HAVE A FAMILY PLAN WITH 3 PHONES. MY HUSBAND IS 71, I AM 68, AND MY DAUGHTER IS 30. WE ARE HELPING OUR WELL EDUCATED DAUGHTER WHO HASN'T BEEN ABLE TO GET A FULL TIME JOB IN HER PROFESSION. SHE HAS A SMART PHONE. MY HUSBAND I HAVE FLIP PHONES. I ACCIDENTLY DROPPED A BOOK ON MY PHONE AND BROKE IT WHILE VOLUNTEERING IN A COMMUNITY LIBRARY. I CANNOT AFFORD TO BUY EVEN A RECONDITIONED FLIP PHONE, AND I CANNOT AFFORD THE FEE($120.00) TO CANCEL MY PHONE CONTRACT. VERIZON KINDLY GAVE ME 3 MONTHS WITHOUT FEES ON THE PHONE I CANNOT USE. NOW THEY WILL BE BIILING ME FOR THE NEXT SIX MONTHS ABOUT $20.00 A MONTH FOR A PHONE I DON'T HAVE. I THOUGHT IT WAS A CRIME TO CHARGE FOR SERVICES NOT PROVIDED. APPARENTLY, NOT FOR VERIZON. THEY CAN EVEN CHARGE A SENIOR WHO HAS BEEN A GOOD CUSTOMER FOR MANY YEARS. ONE WHO ALWAYS PAYS THEIR BILL ON TIME. TRUE, THEY HAVE GIVEN ME REDUCED COSTS FOR NEW PHONES WHEN THE TIME IS UP, BUT ALSO I HAVE ALWAYS RETURNED MY OLD PHONES TO THEM. I THOUGHT IT WAS NICE THAT THEY PROVIDED AN ENVELOPE TO RETURN THEM IN. LITTLE DID I KNOW THAT THEY SELL THEM. ANYWAY, SHAME ON VERIZON FOR TREATING ME THIS WAY! I'M SURE I'M NOT THE ONLY ONE.

Verizon is still providing the service. They are under no obligation to give you a phone, yes they do offer many for little to nothing with a contract but they don't have to. If your t.v. breaks, is the cable company responsible for replacing it since without it, you cannot utilize their service? No.
I recently bought a brand new basic phone for my son from eBay for $20. I just asked for the ESN, and made sure the phone was compatible with my account. Once I knew that, I ordered it. Excellent option since he wanted a qwerty keyboard for texting but no touch screen. If you're careful, eBay is a viable alternative that can save you a lot of money.

Your age doesn't matter.
You are given the option to purchase insurance. You did not do so. Oh well.
