So for some reason my power button no longer works and I am trying to figure out how else I can turn on my phone, Ive read that this occurs a lot with this type of phone. My contract is almost up this month, and I just want to know what I can do to get it functioning again.

Call and talk to them about it.  I called to talk about a broke  s4a month before my contract  was up and they went ahead and let me upgrade no fees aside from 20$ activation.  They actually let me upgrade my s3 4 months early and let me get the discount price on the GS5.

This is not a good situation to be in. When it comes to power buttons, there really isn't too much that can be done to fix it. Is there any damage to the phone? If not, we can check to see what your warranty replacement options are.
