Samsung SCH U820 Reality, data plan or not?

I want to buy the Samsung SCH U820 Reality off ebay. I, however, do not want anything to do with the data package! I've looked all over the discussion boards and all I got out of it was more confusion! Data plan or not? Would appreciate if someone could help with my confusion!

It will not require a data plan, unless you want to activate it on prepaid, then it is considered a feature phone, which does charge data, (found out about this personally) however if you do have a contract currently, it is considered a basic phone. Smiley Happy

Hadn't heard that about prepaid ... I suppose, then, that all multimedia phones (such as the env3) would also require data if activated on prepaid.

Yeah found that one out the hard way, my roommate has prepaid, I only do the postpaid side, so I didn't know until I experienced it, I told him to let me activate his phone since I know the numbers by heart, I transfer to them all the time But basically, when I reached their Customer Service they said at least $90 for 300MB of data. I was like what? It was a Samsung Alias 2.

Hi there sammylou17!

This is a fantastic question. After all, it's always best to check in and verify things before making an investment. With that said, I'm more than happy to provide some resolution here.

Per my resources, the Samsung SCH-U820 does require a data package of $10.00 or higher. Of course, this is dependant on which plan you're currently on. If taking advantage of Share Everything pricing http://bit.ly/xdDajD with other devices on your account, you may not have to worry about paying any more for data if you don't plan on using it for that. If on a standalone plan like our grandfathered Nationwide plans, the data package would be essential for device operation. I hope this helps!

I went ahead and ordered it off Ashton's response and got it activated on my contract plan without a data plan. Thanks to all of you who took the time to consider my confusion! This is a great place to find answers!

Evan,

A vague answer like this would lead a customer to think that they MUST have a data package, if they are on a Nationwide plan. I understand that you didn't outright say it needed a data package, but many customers will take your statement as needing a data package, just adding to the confusion. The Reality DOES NOT require a data package if you are on a grandfathered Nationwide plan.

Why would the data plan be essential for device operation on a nationwide plan?  You don't need data just to call text or use a calendar.  I agree that statement is confusing.  Mary
