The FCC and your 8.1 Cyan Update

"We welcome your complaints and concerns.  Please use the www.fcc.gov/complaints Website as this is the most expedient way to file a complaint.  After doing so, we will assign an FCC Agent to your complaint.  It is the goal of the FCC Agent to work with Verizon to establish some kind of resolution."

And so went my conversation with the FCC today regarding these "irregular", "illegal", "useless", "annoying" and other such-defined complaints that we have all been told "aren't worth filing".

The FCC said that all complaints are considered "real" and that all are assigned to FCC Agents.  The FCC Agent then contacts Verizon to try to find a solution - then brings the customer into the loop to see that either (A) the problem is solved, or (B) the customer decides to escalate because they do not feel that the problem is solved.

"Escalate" was a fresh option so I asked my Rep to explain.  I was told that if you are not satisfied with what the Verizon Rep tells you during their call, that you can contact the FCC and ask for a Mediation Specialist to step in.  This request must be made in writing, must include your complaint number, and must be sent via mail or fax.  A request for mediation is an aggressive step, therefore the FCC can no longer receive electronic correspondence regarding the complaint.  This sounded extremely "official" - making the request in writing, etc. - but a legitimate option nonetheless as complaints in the past have gone nowhere with Verizon.

My FCC Rep was eager to know what my concerns with Verizon were and confirmed that they were legitimate complaints.  She also said that since the Verizon Customer Contract could come into play during mediation, that they always suggest that the consumer's State Attorney's Office receives communication about the complaint as well.  I was told that the State Attorney's Office would take a serious look at the complaint - especially after seeing that I took the time to go through the FCC complaint process and that I am asking for mediation.

I planned on going to the State Attorney's Office with a pile of paperwork after this round of complaints, but the whole idea about FCC mediation may accomplish the goal of getting someone to pay attention at Verizon.  It may accomplish something simple like a documented public update schedule for Windows Phones from Verizon (as has been discussed out here in the past), or it may be something big like a resolution that involves Microsoft working more closely with Verizon to participate in pre-release testing programs.

Do you have your 8.1 Cyan Update yet?  Do you have a better plan to promote you getting your update (or future updates) faster?  If you answered "no" to both, then please join me by filing your complaint.  Feel free to ask for mediation when Verizon calls to ask how things are going and by all means, be sure to let your State Attorney's Office know as well.  No one is looking to sue anyone.  No one is looking for fees or fines.  There is nothing illegal happening here that we are the whistleblowers on.  Just looking for a change that benefits the paying customer when it comes to updating our Windows Phone devices.  Please join me.

If you find the "constant updates" to be so annoying, why don't you just turn them off? You have that option you know.

As far as Mac being more secure, I don't believe many people believe that myth anymore. I believe it was only a couple of months ago that quite a few famous people had personal files and information stolen from them only to be spread around the internet. I also believe it was Apple that kept quiet about its users information being stolen before it finally admitted it after so many people called them out.

In terms of mobile operating systems, there's no denying that WP OS is the most secure of the three options.

Yep I am fully aware of that. The flip side if these patches and updates are necessary having to not install them maybe not a good idea so I start them all running updates at once. It takes time. then the occasional crap out of the update. So its a real pain. But necessary.

The breach done to the Apple devices are similar to what windows and androids all get hit with.

Apple: celebs hacked in 'targeted attack', no iCloud breach - Business Insider

from the link above:

The Apple statement suggested that the celebrities had their accounts hacked by using easy-to-guess passwords, or by giving up their personal data to cyber criminals posing as Apple, a technique known as "phishing."

Thanks.  Looks like you don't understand the calendar and Patch Tuesdays.

So lets remove the Definition Update for Windows Defender items being they are not patches but signature updates.

  • 9/15 list of patches is from the 9/9 Patch Tuesday release.
  • 9/30 patch KB2998257 was for TZ update for Russia and KB299067 was to fix an issue with OneDrive
  • 10/15 list of patches is from the 10/14 Patch Tuesday release.

Thanks for playing, try again.

Looks like you don't understand MS is moving away form patch Tuesdays.

What is Patch Tuesday? - Definition from WhatIs.com

http://www.gfi.com/blog/october-patch-tuesday-roundup-2/

They are still there as far as I can tell. However the top link does speak of patches coming sooner than every two weeks. etc. So I knew I was not dreaming the patches coming sooner.

Thanks I heard that as well for Windows 10 and consumers.  Corporate IT will still go by a schedule patch release.

We're currently taking about how Elector can't understand Patch Tuesday as it is today and blames Microsoft for constantly sending him signature updates daily confusing them as patches.

Yes critical patches are release out-of-band because they could lead to compromised systems.

Look Patch Tuesday is here to stay.  Corporate IT infrastructure rely on this schedule to manage their devices and patch testing and roll out.  If Microsoft were to change this there would be major push back from corporations.

Every Tuesday. Got it.

Please, continue on and don't forget to post a picture of a Windows Phone with a BSOD.

You post the picture of the BSOD. I use a phone that works. I use two different versions of phones that work.

I am not the one on here crying for an update. Nice try. Read and catch up on the conversation.

Nothing in your reply here is relevant to anything I've posted. Nice try at non sequitur though.

You mean like this thread here? There is BSOD or Black Screen of Death. Read up on it.

Blue Screen of Death? : windowsphone

So it does happen.

Priceless, it not the standard BSOD that Windows spits out every so often but just a blank blue screen that some lumia devices spit out when bricked.  Not caused by drivers, memory, etc.

Close but no cigar

Think about it my friend. Blue/Black screen of death has been reported.

That other poster in his/her sarcasm wanted me to post a picture of the BSOD.  There is a Joke App that is a screen saver, but this was a real case of it. In one post I read it said the kernel was responsible on start up. I don't write these posts I find them

This is a BSOD in technical terms

Let me know when you run across one for Windows Phone.

Happy hunting....

I am well aware what a BSOD looks like. Remember I own Windows machines ha ha

However it makes no difference what it looks like in relation to what others have posted.

A blue screen with a smiley face or a picture of the windows logo or a black screen showing nothing.

It is still a screen of death and it means there is an issue.

Don't feel to bad though, I also found out a few Apple devices have shown the equivalent.

...and don't let Verizon's "serious software testing" delay your Microsoft BAND purchase.  This very cool new device requires Windows Phone 8.1 to run and here's how you can get 8.1 on your Verizon Windows Phone...

It's called the Microsoft Windows Phone Preview for Developers (write this down Verizon):

Register as an app developer – Windows app development

Click the link above and register.  Then, download the app and you will have access to the most recent developer version for Windows Phone 8.1.  All of the features that Verizon has been dragging their feet on (except Cyan) will be loaded to your device!  Cortana, Notification Center, Folders and more!  In addition, apps and devices that require 8.1 will also now work with your phone.  I find the preview to be Microsoft's way of getting around the carrier delays and still keeping the customer somewhat satisfied.  I certainly am!

So load up that Developer Preview and head out this weekend to buy that Microsoft BAND before they run out of stock.  It can also be ordered out of the Microsoft Store with 2-day shipping!

That's for apps not RILs, and other things.... There's more to it than just that man...

Also this kind of stuff can't be tested until Microsoft is finished with the code, and phone manufacturers are finished their code either.

Microsoft works with parts manufacturers which is different than device manufacturers.

Also with the response given and what Microsoft person has said you treat as truth FCC will do nothing to help your cause as the update is being worked on and it proves it isn't finished yet which debunks the that it's finished...

So after 2 1/2 months since this thread started what has all the complaining to the FCC accomplished?
