Im going to travel and I would like to know if that in case I do not want to use my verizon smartphone, I just can turn it off and that´s it.

Turn it off and keep it off, that is it. Can't run up any charges with no power. You can also use airplane mode safely. That way you can still look at anything already on the phone like contacts and photos.
