Unable to use download apps

When I go to the app store and choose any app to download, I get an error message that reads "EMAIL VERIFICATION NEEDED"  The message then continues to tell me the following.  your Microsoft account needs to be verified.  Please check your (email@yahoo for verification email".  Sometimes it tells me to check my Hotmail account which I do not have.  My yahoo email address has nothing in the inbox or spam folder.  Why should it be sooo hard to download apps.

Don't you need a Microsoft/Outlook.com account to use a Windows phone?
