Viewing text messages on the LG enV3 VX9200

So as many of you are probably already aware, you have to warn your friends not to send you an emoji or else you lose the whole text message on an LG enV3 VX9200.  All the characters in the message are replaced by small squares / rectangles.

Recently, this also includes quotations and apostrophes that will ruin an entire message.

What's interesting is that on my mom's basic LG phone (LGA380), she is still able to read these types of messages - only the emoji or weird symbol is blocked out.  And what's frustrating is that she doesn't even have a qwerty (keyboard) phone!  The difference is that she uses ATT as her carrier.  So I guess if Verizon or LG is not going to put out a fix for this, then the solution is to switch to ATT???

And no, I'd prefer not to be forced to upgrade to a smart phone.

Thanks for any help on this, even though I'm sure basic phone users are pretty low on the Verizon priority list.
