Just back from a BJs. Also was at a Verizon store at the mall (a real one).
No Windows phones anywhere in either store. In the Verizon store they pulled out an HTC ONE for Windows after asking about it. He said everyone returns Windows Phones and discouraged me from getting one.
BJs, after asking, pulled out an ICON but said "Verizon said" no new update from Windows 8.0 until Windows Phone 9, which will be out "Soon".
So, why IS MICROSOFT SPENDING advertising dollars on TV ads when no one puts the phone on display, discourages people from buying them and gives out mis-information.

Windows phone holds less than 2% of the phone market. I haven't seen an Ad for them ever on TV or anything so they must not spend much.

So 29 out every 30 people with a smartphone do NOT have a Windows phone. The lack of apps is what is preventing me from getting a Windows phone. I'm one of the few Windows 8 PC supporters. So I'm not against OS itself.

to the OP,, they flat out lied to you.
WP9 won't be out till some time Next year. Could be early to mid next year.
Like Late April to May or something. And really that hasn't even been announced, so that is speculation.
As for commercials, I see them all the time on TV.
Cortana smacking the crap out of Siri.
There are plenty of Apps for WP. That argument holds no weight any longer.

That's irrelevant, we should have had the updates for the Icon regardless.

That may be true, but there are STILL several apps which are yet to have a Windows Phone counterpart, several of which I use on a regular basis.
Personally, I would like to try a Windows Phone but until the apps I REGULARLY use are available I can't see that happening.
Verizon Messages
Fios Mobile
ESPN
MaxGo
HBOGo
Golf Channel
Google Voice
This is but a sampling and these are NOT some obscure apps.
