Windows Phone 10 and Verizon Warranty

I currently have an HTC One M8 Windows Phone and I want to try Windows Phone 10, however I'm worried installing the pre-release software will void any warrant I have with Verizon. If the device is rendered useless after an upgrade can I still get assistance from Verizon if my phone won't recover using any of the provided recovery tools?

Great question, stanleymanly21. Installing Windows 10 on the device will not void the warranty, and we'll still be able to help assist in any troubleshooting that may be required.

That's great news! What happens if the phone cannot be recovered even after bringing it into the Verizon store? Will I get a different one?

Allow me to clarify here stanleymanly21. Software updates are pushed out to our devices once they are thoroughly tested and approved. I would not recommend doing the update until this is done. We wouldn't be able to support any issues that you may encounter (if any) as we won't have the tools available to be able to do so. But it is up to you.

You can recover the phone. There is a Microsoft program for Desktop PC that will restore your phone to Windows 8.0 or 8.1 if you do not like Windows 10.

I had a Lumia Icon that I loaned to a friend and he bricked it trying to force an update. I couldn't recover it myself even using all the tools available to consumers. So I took it to a Microsoft store and they worked on it for about two hours. Success!! They flashed it back to factory new condition and I was able to reload my apps, one by one. Worked like a charm for as long as I owned it after that.

I have a Nokia Lumia Icon. I am enrolled in the Windows Insider Program, Slow Ring. I have been using Windows 10 for a couple of months now. Yesterday MS pushed out the build that will be released OTA. I have not had any significant issues. This builds is stable. You can install Windows 10 without VZW buying off on the OS. At some point there will be device specific firmware updates. The FW will have to be approved by VZW before it can be installed. However, MS has created a way for FW to update even if you have installed Win10.

Check Windows Central for more info.

I am really glad I moved to Win10. My warranty is up, so I took the risk. However, I would not update a 928 until VZW releases the update for that phone. The newer hardware works with Win10 well, but the older hardware has issues.

well said! I downloaded that build also last week and imvho its solid! I have had zero  issues on my 735- the redstone build on the fast ring gave me fits but the build that's going out OTA build 10586.164 is smooth as butter on my phone.
