Windows Phone 7.8 Update
d_inferno_stylz

The announcement from Microsoft today about Windows Phone 7.8 to current devices got me wondering if VZW will be pushing this update, or should I jump ship to t-mobile for the new lumia's?

Verizon needs to provide this update to at least satisfy the few people who have windows phones.

I believe they said current devices will be updatable to 7.8.

The first issue is VZW/HTC want 7.8 on the Trophy or just force users to purchase new Windows Phone 8 device. If you can wait till the new Windows Phone 8 devices are out than wait. The new devices will have higher resolutions, support microSD cards, NFC, multi-core.

Microsoft announcement quite clear that 7.8 will be available to all Mango Phones "shortly" after the release of Winodws Phone 8. There also will be options to bypass the acrrier for the update.

No exixting phone will get WIndows Phone 8

I wonder if the Verizon Windows Phone Update Team (one guy? LOL...) is having trouble when updating the HTC Trophy to Windows Phone 7.8, like the problems experienced with Nokia phones. http://gadgetinsiders.com/windows-phone-7-8-update-not-too-smooth-for-nokia-lumia-900-and-800-users/...

If this was the case, I would completely understand and patiently wait a couple of necessary months for Verizon and Microsoft to fix the bugs. I would also appreciate the news that Verizon was protecting us from installing a buggy OS. It would be a shame to go from the "rock solid" Windows 7.5 OS to a newer OS with bugs.

However, all we can do is speculate because it seems to me that Verizon prefers to to keep its customers completely out of the loop.

Since VZW has made no moves in pushing this to its customers here's a tip...

If anyone is interested, you can force the 7.8 update using the SevenEighter app. It will automatically update your phone to the latest version of WP7.8 (as there have been a couple small updates since 7.8 was released) It will intelligently pull the update specifically for the VZW Trophy so no worries there. It will ask what language packs to install, you should pick whatever you currently have on your phone... in our case our Trophy's had English and Spanish so I checked those (even though I will never use Spanish). Then you just let it go and do its thing... takes maybe 10 - 20 minutes.

It's a super easy, painless process.... You even retain all your media and apps. We've had no problems with any of our updated devices and the additional tile sizes are a great benefit.

If you want to do this proceed at your own risk but otherwise just go out to Bing and do a search like: "SevenEighter Trophy Windows Phone 7.8" That should turn up all the info you'll need.

Wow - to me, it really feels like Verizon doesn't care about us original Trophy owners getting the update. Why?

It am finding it difficult locating a Seven Eighter installer without all the crapware/viruses also injected in it.

Verizon is amazing!

I sure hope we get 7.8 before Microsoft ends mainstream support in 09/14. http://support.microsoft.com/lifecycle/search/default.aspx?sort=PN&alpha=windows+phone&Filter=FilterNO

I understand there will be a 7.9 between now and that end date that will continue mainstream support.

I also understand that Microsoft fixed the 7.8 live tile bug in March.

04/17/2013 - Since Verizon and HTC do not care, I did the update myself using the above mentioned tool. It worked like a charm and it was definitely worth it. I am not suggesting that you do it because I would probably be violating some forum rule. When picking out my new Win 8 phone, I may instead go with a provider who seems to believe in customer care and communication.
