I have an older Lenovo phone that I'd like to let my daughter use for her first phone if I could, but I'm not sure if it is compatible or not. It's a Lenovo MA388 and has a spot for a SIM card, although the only other information I have is that it is GSM unlocked.

It could work possibly on the AT&T or T-Mobile GSM network. It will not work on the Verizon Wireless CDMA network. You need a Verizon Wireless branded device to be compatible with network.
I'm most definitely NOT a VZW employee. If a post answered your question, please mark it as the answer.
