texting problem with new Windows Phone 8 update

I think the update is called GDR3, but I am unsure. I am currently running OS version 8.0.10327.77. I have a Windows Phone HTC 8x with Verizon as my carrier. I just downloaded and installed this update yesterday (new features listed here: http://www.windowsphone.com/en-US/how-to/wp8/basics/windows-phone-8-update-history). Of course, being part of Verizon, I was excited to finally use group texting and I liked the radio feature and Google account compatibility assurance. Though all of those work well (I am assuming), there are now new problems that were not issues before this update.

First Issue: "Can't send message. Try again."

As seen in this image:

wp_ss_20130831_0001.jpg

No matter how many times I hit try again, it does nothing. I can copy and paste the text and it will result with nothing. i can try to type a completely new message and nothing. When I get these texting "blocks", it isn't just for one contact but all of them. It has nothing to do with reception or internet as I am in areas with strong reception and access to both. This texting failure would never happen prior to the update and it is quite frustrating that it now does. This error only happens when texting, but if i switch to Facebook it works completely fine. However, I don't communicate via Facebook and neither do my friends. We text and right now about 50% of my day results in failed texts.

2nd Issue: Slower phone

Everything my phone does is now a second or more slower. Open texting, email, an app...whatever- it all takes longer to do and is looses its fluidity it had before.

3rd Issue: data operations don't work as well.

Anything using data when I am away from wifi either fails or takes exponentially longer to use. Internet browsing is agonizing now when I need directions or quick answers. This may in correlation to issue #2, but I am certain all of these are related to the overall new update.

Please fix. I love Windows Phone when it works, but with the bugs and "late in the game" on apps and features that are staples on Android and IOS devices, it sure makes it difficult to be a Windows Phone fan. I want to be able to brag about my Windows Phone with anyone/everyone so they will want to get one too.

This texting issue has been going on for months and even lasted through a major update which we were told would fix the issue which if anything made it worse. I am beyond sick of having to either restart my phone, or turn airplane mode on and off just to send out a text. Verizon blames HTC and HTC blames Verizon. I just want a phone that works! Maybe after 9 years of being with Verizon it's time to switch to AT&T to get a phone that works.

Verizon, PLEASE DO SOMETHING!!! I'm willing to switch to a 928 which I hear doesn't have this issue.  I can not take another year of this crap until I can upgrade my phone!

I can't believe there has been nothing in response from Verizon on this. I actually regret ever switching back to them. When i went into the store with my phone about my issue i got all sorts of sarcasm for having a Windows phone. Look i get it that it's not an iphone or android but you can still care about the product you sell. Acknowledge the issue!! Other service providers did after gdr2 and fixed it.

I am having the exact same issue.  Have a HTC 8x windows phone that intermittently will NOT send or receive texts.  It does not matter where I am located whether I am in full service area or not.  The only solution is to power down the phone completely and then re-start it.  The first time this happened was in the Verizon Store the day I bought the phone!!  I have all the latest software updates installed, and still a problem.

When will this get fixed?  Too many people have this issue!

I'm having the "can't send" texting issue, as well. I've been through three HTC Windows phones in the last 6 months, all under warranty.  With each one I've had it switched because of a new problem that Verizon can't fix.  The "can't send" began with my last phone that suddenly stopped receiving calls and frequently showed 'No service" even when standing next to another verizon customer who had service.  This phone, which I have had for a week and a half, has now become virtually useless with text.  I couldn't send any messages for several days, and rebooting it didn't solve the problem.  I installed the latest update, which helped for less than 24 hours.  Now I'm gradually having more and more trouble with texts not sending again.

I think I found the solution to the windows 8 texting problem. I just went into the first menu of the texting app and there at the bottom you have the little man with a box and it is called status. If your status is on offline, texting will not work. So you have to adjust it to away, available or whatever, as long as it is not 'off line'

This problem does not go away on its own.  Once it starts, other problems arise and they compound until the phone is pretty much useless, i.e. constant freezes, lockups, slow transitions and reactivity to gestures (tap, swipe, etc.).  This is not the network and it is not fixed by resetting the phone.  The only way out of the mess is to replace the phone.  I've had Verizon techs and customer service confirm this and I know personally because I'll soon be on my 2nd HTC 8X replacement in less than a year.  If you're a pc person, you would bench the RAM, bench the HDD, then check/fix all errors in the FAT, then check for spyware, virus or rootkit.  Ok, I realize that's everything but the mouse... sorry.  How that translates to Windows Phone I don't know.

HTC Windows Phone 7 owners are correct- this did not happen w/ Windows Phone 7 or 7.5- only Windows Phone 8.  Failed sent texts contain some kind of routing information and those texts will almost never go through unless the text is copied and pasted to new text and sent.

when the HTC 8X is working, it's nearly perfect.  Makes me wonder why anyone would be an Android or pay 3x as much for an iPhone.  There are 3 or 4 minor, but inexcusable flaws in Windows Phone and app support is still a little embarrassing.  Frankly, when I see an app available for a Blackberry but not Windows Phone, I just want to freakin' cry.

Over the past several months the texting issue that my wife and
I were experiencing with our 8x phones has drastically decreased BUT is
still occurring
. Now it only seems to happen when either of us is within
range of a wireless network extender. We don't have the problem at any other
times. I'm curious, do any of you own a network extender and, if so, do you
notice more of an issue with texting when you're within range of it? We live in
an area with very poor signal quality so we absolutely need to have the
extender. My wife also has one in the office where she works because they too
have poor signal quality in that area. She is the only one in her office with
the Windows 8x phone and the only one who has this problem. I should point out
that wireless extenders only improve call quality and supposedly do nothing to
improve data reception. It would seem though that both extenders are affecting
our particular HTC Windows 8x phones because when we are outside of our house
and the wife isn't near her's at work, texts go through totally fine. Whenever
I search this topic in the forums or even through Bing I don't find any related
topics or people having the same issues with their extenders. We're VERY frustrated
because this issue has been plaguing our phones since mid-last summer. While
the issue seems to be resolved when we're away from our extenders, it does NOT
seem to be when we're near them. Anybody have any ideas?

We have the exact same problem when I get home and it picks up on my extender.

Most of my problems evolve when my phone loses / has intermittent service (such as when I am in the building I work in). It seems that once I lose service for an extended period of time and then regain service, that is when all the issues start occurring. The phone usually works perfectly fine when I have service all the time, it does not start acting up until I lose service. Once I regain service, it usually take me hitting "Try Again" three times before anything will send. I receive text messages without any problems, only sending messages seems to be the issue.

It could possibly be that you just lose service intermittently for an extended period of time which causes the phone act up. At least that is what seems to be the common theme. Like the comment if you are having this similar issue, maybe it will get some attention (wishful thinking). Maybe a few people can try to replicate losing service for an extended period of time (airplane mode doesn't count) and then seeing if they have the same issues.

The only resolution that I know of and that works is to power cycle your phone. I spoke with a rep who said that manufacturer was notified of this issue and that they were working it...of course I contacted the manufacturer and the only thing they could say is that they couldn't do anything and to contact the provider. So they just give you the run around.

Seeing that this phone is now over a year old ... I would not expect a solution seeing the age of the device, the small amount of people affected, and the expected release of newer devices throughout 2014. I will most likely be switching over to a newer lumia (if they will still be named that) when the time comes seeing that it gets way more attention then the HTC phones.

Same problem still exists after GDR 3 update. Seems to be getting worst. Very annoying. By the way, resetting your phone does not solve the problem.

Think I found solution - it's very easy and worked very well for me.

So...Go to: Phone, then tap on three little dots in the right bottom corner,

then tap "settings", scroll a little bit down, and *TURN OFF INTERNATIONAL ASSIST* .

That's all! Enjoy!

Tried that one months ago. Didn't resolve the problem.

Well I just got my Nokia Lumina 928 in exchange for my 8 X HTC today.

It's been interesting trying to bring attention to these issues for the 8X to this forum but I've now officially turned the page on the HTC phone.

My advise to everyone is to stay on top of your issue with Verizon support. Continue until it's resolved to your satisfaction.

Major Payne,

I'm curious, are you experiencing any of the same issues on your new Nokia phone? The reason I ask is because I too entertained the idea of switching to that phone because I like the Windows operating system and would like to continue using it if texting is no longer an issue. If switching to the Nokia will solve the problem then I will definitely do it. Please let me know.

Thanks

Well had it going on my second day and I've been texting as much as I can to try to get the issue (might be annoying my friends though lol) I had with the 8 X HTC but so far no problems with the Nokia Lumina 928 at all.

Works perfectly so far.

Same problem here just started on my phone in the last couple days. OS 8.0.10501.127

I'm of the same opinion as FollowrOfChrist... this is unacceptable. Will try toggling airplane mode to resolve, but that's not an acceptable workaround. There is no reason this should still be unresolved.

Please focus some attention on this, VZW.

Thank you!

I had an interesting conversation with a Level 2 tech at Verizon named  Chris.  While he could not fully explain the cause of the issue, it  seems to have something to do with the SMS traffic and the "Switch" that  the cell phone is connected to at the time.  He "cleared the traffic"  and reset some things with my account on the switch.

I honestly  have no idea what this all means but for now it seems to have resolved  the issue.  I can tell you that I will keep calling and bothering them  if this fix is not permanent.

He also recommended as I travel a  lot, that I power cycle the device at each new location I go to.  Hard  resets the switch connection as apposed to my phone just jumping to a  new switch that is available.

I have the same issues with my 8x. Can't send text. Can't read sim card. And seems to turn off whenever it feels like it. I have taken it to Verizon for all 3 problems and they are absolutely useless. I haven't noticed the Sim card issue or it turning off whenever it wants to since the last update tho, so that's a plus. But I have to deal with the can't send text issue on a daily basis, and it really makes me want to throw it at the wall sometimes...

GDR3 update came to my phone today. Issue still persists. This is absolutely ridiculous.
