When will Verizon roll out Windows Phone 8.1 to current customers using Windows Phone 8.0?

OEMs are suppose to get 8.1 on 4/14 (if no show stopping bugs are discovered) and Nokia said during Microsoft BUILD Conference that sometime during the Summer 8.1 will be available on all devices which include a new firmware (Cyan).  So the way VZW operates they'll probably release it late summer early fall.

You can join the developer preview program and get sometime after the 14th.

Lastly VZW will never comment on release schedule for updates.

Has anyone looked into "Preview for Developers"?

Can there be any 8.1 conflicts with Amber, before Cyan?

all you need is AppStudio from MS to be a "Developer"

If you go that route, you will void your Warranty.

Installing 8.1DP should not void the warranty.  The warranty covers the device itself, not the OS and 8.1DP is an update to the OS.  Of course VZW Reps will tell you differently.  For a more detailed explanation on why your warranty wouldn't be affected, I'd urge you to check out this topic on the forums at WP Central.

I installed the Dev Preview on Monday also. Still getting to it, but some great features, including:

     Notification Center

     Cortana

Background Image on Start with clear tiles

Follow wpcentral.com for more information.

I upgraded my 928 on Monday to 8.1. So far its been great its like i have a whole new phone.

All i did was register at the App Studio. Then download Preview for Developers App. Run said App and check for updates.

Also you need update 2 at the least.

It's not officially released yet and you can install the preview version.

If you want to install the preview you'll need a free developers account, https://dev.windowsphone.com/en-us/develop/devpreview

Then you need to install the Preview for Developers application on the phone itself.

Please be warned that doing this can void your warranty and there is no easy way of going back to 8.0.

The Preview for Developers can void your warranty? Or do you mean that other thing some folks do to change the country code via new firmware and get the Microsoft WP8.1 firmware?

I installed the 8.1 Developer Preview about a month ago on my Icon.  Since then, it has been hell!  My phone freezes up and gets very hot.  The battery drains within minutes.  I have to restart it several times a day.  Everything seems to work OK until I start using WiFi or leave and connect to another WiFi.

The Developer Preview says you cannot go back to a previous version.  Is there a way to go back?  I loved my phone until I did this update.  I just want to go back to the way it was until Verizon (hopefully) releases their 8.1 update.

Have you installed the latest update to the developer preview?

I also had similar problems with the phone heating up and battery drain.  Once I installed the update and did a hard reset my Icon hasn't had any issues as of yet.

The key thing is that with any OS update is to do a hard reset.  A lot of users have said it solves majority of the issues you encounter.

You can revert back to 8.0, Windows Phone Central Forums

I did install the latest version of the preview and I did do many, many hard resets.  ๐Ÿ™‚    I am looking forward to reverting back.  Thanks!!

Interesting my problems (and many others) went away instantly once hard reset was done.  Wonder if you might have a defective device....

A hard reset is completely different than a soft reset.  Not to say you didn't but you went to settings > about and tapped on reset your phone?

BryanSP,

Yes you can revert back to WP8.0

Here is there link that takes you to Nokia's website.

FAQ - FAQ - How can I recover/reset/restore my phone software? - Nokia - USA

You'll have to download and run Nokia's Software Recovery Tool.  It will wipe EVERTHING on your phone and install the latest WP8.0 build that was released to Verizon.

BryanSP,

I hope you got your phone straightened out.   I installed 8.1 on my wife's Icon and she is having some of the same issues.  My son-in-law has the Icon without the update and has none of the problems.

I hope you'll not shy away from the release update when it comes out.  A phone OS Beta typically is built fo the most common device specs and not optimized specifically for the hardware.  When the full release gets pushed out, it will be deployed with hardware specific firmware updates designed to make the OS  and the hardware to work in beautiful harmony.

Regards,

Joe

Hard reset is key. I've had this clear up problems on my Lumia Icon, BlackBerry Q10 and Z10, and on an iPhone. Along with a simple restart, the hard reset is a huge problem solver.

BryanSP We want you to love your device again. We apologize for the issues since the update, however, there is not a way to go back to the previous version. Have you attempted any basic troubleshooting for the freezing issues?  For the battery overheating, the device would need to be taken into a corporate store for inspection.

Sorry, you are wrong. There is a way to go back to 8.0 and it's rather easy to do. Download the Nokia Software updater for retail and follow the instructions.

I would do a hard reset before reverting back to 8.0 and also after you reload 8.0. Just as extra step to make sure the base system is installed correctly and then reload your apps. Do not restore an old backup. This backup consist of some data from 8.1 and could screw something up. Reload your apps from scratch and set up your start screen from scratch.

This is what you should download and install to go back to 8.0:

Nokia Software updater for Retail. version 4.1.0

Microsoft officially release W8.1 to cell providers a couple of days ago. VerizonWireless: What's the ETA for distributing 8.1 to Nokia Lumia 928 users? A phone call, email or snail mail would be nice! Tnx!!

VZW does not publicly announce reschedule for software updates until the day they are released.

I've had this argument with them over the phone numerous times and it falls on deaf ears.
