I am thinking of buying an iPad. I assume that if I wanted to do message texting on the iPad, I would need to add the device to my Verizon account?

I'm sure you are excited about getting a new tablet. If you plan on using only iMessage you won't need to add a line. The only caveat is that you can only sent iMessages to other people on iMessage.

You can also use Message+ on the iPad using your phone number and not add a line to your account.
