Bought iPhone from Verizon, moving to Italy, will it work with Italian carrier?

I bought my phone through Verizon and paid it off. I want to take it with me to Italy and use another SIM card in it, with another carrier. Will it work? Or do I have to sell the phone to someone with Verizon? 

Any advice?
