I had an AT&T iPhone 4s until 3 days ago when my work gave me a Verizon iPhone 4s.
Previously, my AT&T iPhone 4s worked just fine with no connection or bar issues. But, I am now on my 2nd Verizon iPhone and I continue having my 3G turn to "O" when I am at work....all the while having FULL bars on the phone. I will have 4-5 bars and poof....3G turns to O and my speed drops down to dialup.
I had this issue with the 1st phone...did all the things Verizon told me to do...no help. They replaced my phone....2nd Verizon phone....same issues.
1) My walls at work are not heavy or big and other Verizon users at work have no connection issues (though I am the only Verizon iPhone user...everyone else has Droids, etc...)
2) My area is completely covered in service (as 3 different Verizon reps told me)
3) It does this mostly when I am at work but has occured 1-2 times outside of work. I would say that while at work it is 70% of the time on 3G and 30% on "O"
I have called Verizon 4 total times now and the last 3 phone calls end up with Verizon telling me that they don't know what to say and that they guess I could replace my phone a 3rd time. Huh?
I am smack dab in a solid Verizon reception area, I am in a small house next to windows and single/small walls, and every other phone in the house (including my past AT&T phone) works perfectly.
Sigh....I need help.

It certainly doesn't sound like the phone having problems. What does the local store say about the issue? I'd keep calling Verizon and maybe even send some emails. I gotta say, I've emailed them twice over little billing issues and they have always responded in a few hours and solved my issue.
Good luck with this, keep us posted.

Thanks
I finally got to someone who sent me to Tier 2 Support...who then set me up with a ticket
The Tier 2 woman said she would be willing to bet it has something to do with the tower and my phone.
Whatever it is...fix it please!

The 3 times in 3 years I've reported such an issue, it was resolved in a few days.

Well, my 2nd phone still continues going from 3G to "0" during the day. It is not just my office but anywhere around my office which is smack dab near a tower and I am always getting 4-5 full cars yet the 3G goes to "0" probably half the day and my data crawls to absolutely zero.
2 different Verizon stores near me say they have never seen this before....As I said above, I got a Ticket from Verizon and I talked to them today and they have no idea either....as they think I should possibly try a 3rd phone?
So now, I am left in a spot that I frankly am left speechless on what to do. Verizon has no idea what is wrong....the Verizon stores around me say they have never seen this....and I am left with no working phone in a city with plenty of connection

Mine is doing the same thing. i got the phone right after it was released and its been working great till yesterday. I have no data at my house now. I left for work this morning and "poof" i got it back and it worked fine all day. Soon as i get near my neighborhood, i have nothing. I talked to my brother who also has the 4s and his didnt work when he came over today. I called verizon and they didnt have much to say. They put in a ticket in the engineering dept and are gonna get back to me in a day or so. So we'll see what they say. Gotta be a tower/network issue in my area.

I thought the "O" symbol meant that the phone was connecting to the 1X data network (2G). Which would explain why the data speeds is slow.
Could you have building interference that is blocking the 3G outside and the 1X seems to get through?
I'm most definitely NOT a VZW employee. If a post answered your question, please mark it as the answer.

I had the same problem the other day but we were on a highway with no obstructions. It cleared up after a few miles but drove down the same highway earlier with no problems. Does technology sometimes drives you mad?

You may just hit a dead spot belto, I have a area on one of the highways I travel almost daily and once I hit a small area for a few blocs my device would drop signal sometimes or data drops to 3G from a consistant 4G signal..
This is the pleasures of using technology... Nothings perfect..
