Assigning ringtone to contacts

I am having problems assigning a ringtone tone to contacts.  No matter which ringtone I assign on the Edit Contact screen,  the default ringtone from "Settings/Sounds" overrides.  Do I not know what I am doing or is this a problem with the phone.

Be sure to save after you edit

After you pick the ringtone you want to use hit save in upper right corner before you hit the one in the left to Go back to the profile
