I recently became the owner of a hand-me-down iPhone 4. This iPhone is off-contract and can be unlocked.
I would like to replace my current cell phone on our family plan without adding a data plan. Our plan is also off-contract for all phones.
Is it possible to use the iPhone ONLY for voice calls and texting? We currently share 700 minutes and unlimited texts.
Thanks.

No. You cannot activate an iPhone (or any smartphone) on Verizon without a data plan.

Why? Seems weird. I use a cell phone and an iPod touch, which uses WiFi only. I don't understand why it's so taboo to have a smartphone that makes calls and uses WiFi only. "Want to make calls? You're going to have to pay $30/mo. for data you're not going to use."
