Data Charges!

Why are both me & my husband being charged for data while we're sleeping.

I haven't been on the internet in a week!  I don't email or stream videos.

I don't download!  I didn't even need internet,  I use my desktop at home.

What are these charges from?  I never hardly even get on my phone

for internet ever!

You could have an app or apps Running in the Back ground, some have too, for the phone to function properly ((  I use and have used an App called System App for many years Now i have Android phones there the Motorola Razr Maxx and this App Monitors my CPU use, Network Use ( It also show me if i have any apps Running in the back ground the Temperature of the phone and the Battery Level..

It might not be a bad thing to see if  iToons has an App Similar to System Panel, to Monitor the activity on the phone, You could shut the phones off to stop this but if you both are to were you need them on it best to leave them on.. But i understand the frustration in were the Data is going especially if your on  "A"  Limited Data Plan and it's eating into your Valuable Minutes..

As i mentioned i own only Android Phones and not one of the iPhone's but there are some Customers on the Forum that own's iPhone's and some on here own both Android and iPhone and they Can help ya a little more as they know the phone more than i Do..

I'd say by Noon or this Evening you should have some Good suggestion's to Go buy..  b33 Smiley Happy

We are having the same problem! usually at night between 9 and 11pm, at home and the phones are connected to our WiFi

The simple solution to these overage problems is to turn Mobile Data OFF in the settings panel when you are not using it. Also turn wi-fi and bluetooth off when you aren't using those also, That way,no unexpected overages. Doing this, my data logs show my expected daily usage of 20-30 Meg a day like clockwork. Never used more than 1 Gig of my 2 Gig data allowance. Been under control like this for YEARS.

Thing is this is happening on my old phone that my son now uses.  He doesn't watch videos or anything outside of the house (when it is on Wifi), and these things are happening at night while he is asleep.  This is clearly a verizon problem, not a user problem.

This "happens" for two reasons:

1 Data is now being charged for instead of being unlimited at a flat rate. If this were not the case you wouldn't care how much data the phone uses. So problem #1: Business Model.  Verizon doesn't WANT to "fix" that. Data overages are now a huge source of revenue for them at the consumer's expense. Consider their profit margins last quarter wrein excess of 50%.

2 Not taking pre-emptive action by turning mobile data OFF when not using it. So, problem #2: Personal responsibility. This IS a user problem, and CAN be managed (look at my previous post).

1 I agree with.

2 I do not.  The simple fact is i've used this phone for 2 years and never had a problem and never had to turn anything off.  I would hardly use 1GB a month, now it has doubled.  To me that is a verizon problem since nothing has changed on this end. If anything the phone is being used less than before.  I am not arguing with you, but this is clearly not a user caused problem since this has just started within the last two months.

I've also noticed that no Verizon people chime in on any of these data usage probelm threads, go figure.

I don't want to argue either, but I do know there has been ongoing attempts by verizon to account for every single byte of data going through their network and charging for it. They are (by their CFO's admission of intent in share holder meetings) charging for all machine to machine (M2M) background communications where they didn't before. These bytes are often frame bytes devoid of information for the delineation and segregation of data packets and other network technicalities. They want to charge for this, and this accounting makes your usage go up substantially. So if you leave your mobile data on, you are opening yourself up to potentially massive data overages for Verizon's financial benefit (fiduciary duty to their investors I believe they call it).

So I say once more, preemptive responsibility to manage your pipe may now be required where perhaps none was before.

Thanks.  I will look at it over the next few days.  I also downloaded a few data trackers to see what is using what.  Funny thing is that it is happening on the iphone4 but not the 5
