I had a question and wondered if anyone could answer. I have noticed that my data for myself is almost 3 GB for myself. I have only used my phone a few times not being on wifi, I was wondering if when my alerts for facebook, emails, or games go off does that cost data even though i don't open it. And also if I;m on wifi and I use facetime with someone on a ipad does that take data. Im just trying to figure out why my data is so high.

If you doing something on wifi typically it doesent charge data but if your wifi times out it might charge data or if your phone goes dark the wifi times out I think that's what I have heard. A lot of people are saying there data usage is through the roof.
I normally use 3gigs last month somehow I used 10. Vzw says only the five has this issue but some others think it's more then that. I can count for like 1gig more then that but not 7 more then that.

Although I haven't seen the data spike that has been well documented all over the internet with other iOS 6 users it seems that what you are stating is in-line with those that are having the issue. Some seem to say that the carrier update worked for them...others have said it didn't work. I wish I could explain why I seem to have dodged the problem with both of the iPhones on my account but I really don't have an explanation. The only difference seems to be that I still have unlimited data on my lines (but I have been monitoring the usage out of curiosity to see if the usage numbers are higher than they had been) and everyone that I've noticed posting are on tiered data lines it seems. But in all fairness, chances are those that have unlimited data haven't bothered to check their usage because the issue doesn't affect them.
I can only suggest that you contact VZW to add your complaint/issue to those that are also experiencing it...also so it is documented on your account. I know VZW stated that customers with the issue wouldn't have to pay for the abnormal usage while the known problem is going on...I just don't know if they are saying/thinking the issue was solved with the carrier update.

I am having the exact same problem with my 4S- I was told to upgrade to OS6 which I did- still has not solved the problem. I call and/or write Verizon at least every other day on this issue lately and I am not getting any satisfaction. I will NOT pay for overages. I have WiFi at home and my computer in the office - I rarely surf the net, use FB, etc and am sure that ALL applications are off and none running in the background.
I am about ready to leave Verizon after 12 years because of this frustration. BTW- now I don't even get an acknowledgement when I write

When I bring my phone back up after being dark it shows it is on 3G, I unlock it and then it goes to my wi-fi. Also, I have checked my data usage and on the nights I don't turn my phone off it is using data all night long. Sounds like Verizon has figured out a way to get us to pay even more!

Apple has programmed the software to turn off the WiFi radio while the phone is asleep. When it does that, the cellular data connection becomes active again UNLESS you turn it off. The phone is functioning as intended.
I'm most definitely NOT a VZW employee. If a post answered your question, please mark it as the answer.
