How can I block scam phone calls, when each one displays a different phone number, often with an invalid area code?

I'm receiving robocalls at a rate of about 3 an hour.  Each one appears to originate from a different phone number, and some of the area codes seem to be invalid or unassigned (e.g. 635, 968).  Blocking individual numbers won't help, because they never seem to repeat.  Any suggestions short of requesting a new number?  Also, why can't verizon block all calls that display an obviously false caller ID?

I can see how all those calls can become pretty annoying, Nickpl. Our Call & Message Block http://vz.to/MqEgqB only allows for calls to be blocked from up to 5 complete 10-digit numbers at a time. Since this doesn't seem to be something useful, there's two alternatives I can suggest aside from changing your number. The first would be Family Base http://vz.to/1lP1hFj. For $5 per month, you can block up to 20 numbers in addition to international, restricted, or blocked numbers. Your iPhone also has a block capability built in. You can save the numbers for the unwanted callers in your phone's contact list and then visit Settings>Phone>Blocked>Add New to block that contact. Calls will be sent to voicemail immediately, so it won't prevent them from leaving a message but will avoid the call ringing on your end.
