I want to disconnect a phone, can i do that online and is that the same thing as suspend a phone line?

You must call *611 or 1-800-922-0204 and cancel. It cannot be done on line. You can suspend a line online from your My Verizon portal after you log in.
You can also cancel a line via porting out your service to another provider.

This is ridiculous. Switched carriers on a few of my phones. now with the new service and Verizon won't cancel the old phones even though they can't be used. told them we shut off the old phones and turned on the new but still showing suspended not cancelled. Thinking about cancelling my last 2 phones with Verizon. Think they need a class action suit to allow people to cancel service without jumping through hoops.
