I am a new iphone user but consider myself pretty saavy when it comes to working with electronics.  that being said, i have not been able to backup my data from my phone via icloud.

on my iphone 4s, i have icloud turned on.  on itunes i have backup settings set to backup via icloud.  i have tried syncing/backing up via the phone itself and through itunes.  however, when i go to icloud.com to confirm the backup, there is no data in the contacts, photostream, etc.

ive done everything the apple support website has said to do but still no luck. am i missing something???  HOW THE HELL DO I GET MY STUFF BACKED UP VIA ICLOUD????????????????????????????

Dear Jdormer33,

Apple has made it hard to let you see your backups. You can't see them from iCloud.com, You can tap settings on your phone- iCloud-storage and backup- manage storage. However if you have a Mac make sure you have OS X Lion 10.7.2, then go to system preferences- iCloud -sign in- manage- backups. If you have a PC MAKE SURE IT HAS VISTA SP2 OR WIN. 7 SP1 and download the iCloud control panel here (this does not work with XP) http://www.apple.com/icloud/setup/pc.html

thanks for the quick info. i downloaded the icloud control panel and only the photostream and bookmarks are available.  specifically, the contacts tab is visible but unavailable to click on.  at the top, it tells me that i must install outlook to use contacts, calendars and mail.

so do i have to have microsoft outlook installed on my computer in order to backup my contacts???  this seems kind of wierd.

thanks again

It is sometimes frustrating what Apple allows/requires for its Devices to work the way users would like vs. how Apple lets them work, including Apps and services.  The iCloud back-up is a good example.  Apple has changed iCloud.com so you can now see what you have backed up.  Previously it was "hidden" and you just had to trust it and you could see on your device's "home" page in iTunes (as well as in your Device's Settings) when it last backed up to the Cloud.

As Apple's site states (the one iphone4sguy cited above) for PC's "Outlook 2007 or 2010 is required for accessing iCloud email, contacts, and calendars. Safari 5.1.1 or Internet Explorer 8 or later is required for accessing bookmarks".  So, unfortunatley, for your back-ups for these items to get done via iCloud, yes, you do need Outlook.  It does, however, work quite smoothly.  No need to do "manual" back-ups anymore.  Any entry you make on your Device is synched and backed up to your PC and the Cloud, and vice versa. It works seemlessly.  Any contacts, calendar and/or e-Mail entries you have in Outlook are backed up via the Cloud.

To make up your contacts to iCloud, you need to make sure iCloud is the default contacts account.
