How to deactivate Verizon service for THIS phone? (Trading In)

I am going to trade in my iPhone 4S using the trade-in.vzw.com service and I see where it says:
"Important - you must deactivate service on your device before shipping."

How can I do that? Whenever I activate my new iPhone device, will it automatically deactivate the one I am sending in? Thanks.

In settings you must do a complete factory reset. This removes everything from your iPhone. It will remove your apple id and password, files and music and the find my iPhone feature.

Verizon will drop your gift card down to almost nothing if any Apple program is still running.
