International roaming - no service

So I am vacationing in Germany for 2 weeks with my iphone4s which supposedly works internationally..  I called prior to leaving , asked if my phone will work over seas, the csr said yes and to just update your roaming prior to leaving, which I did. Upon arriving my phone goes through the whole searching......no service.  I called Verizon and now this csr says that my phone should work but I also need to have the global travel plan as well. I added it, rebooted the phone and still not working. Tech said that she could transfer me to tech support, I spoke to tech support and they said everything looks ok but now I need a global gsm SIM card...which will not help me while here.

I thought the whole point of the iphone4s was that it could do both CDMA and gsm....I also checked my phone and it has a SIM card which I thought was used for global roaming..

I really don't know what todo at this point as Verizon support is pretty much unhelpful as they tell me different things each time and do not seem to be trained in their own products.

Any advice??

Thanks!!

To use local sim you have to have it unlocked which is being 2 months consecutive or more in good standing with other stipulations. There probably talking that you can by adding global plan because that's a Verizon plan and I don't think they would want you to use local sim or know about it. Sometimes there not clear on how to do things if just except there yes answer.

Hi gina thanks for replying..Yea I know about the local sim thing which I don't want to use, I just want to use my VZ number.  Is there anything I can do while overseas to make that happen ? Some magic set of words to tell support people?

If your useing it for data I would use wifi so it won't charge you anything. It could get costly. I think to be able to use your phone you hav to add global services. I would have your phone set to airplane mode if your not useing it to Save money. If your useing wifi shut off cellular data too.

FYI all I had to do was add global services on my account myself from the

website and now everything is working....lots of incompetence from VZ

support....at least they allow us to add features to our phones

....probably due to this scenario....
