My phone did an update and now it wants a passcode

I don't remember setting a passcode on my phone. when setting it up. Why is it asking for one now? I don't remember what it is and I don't want to lose all my information by resetting the device.

A passcode cannot be accidentally set because it requires confirmation twice to institute.  Your running a iPhone 4S so you don't have iTouch.    Your iPhone could have been remotely locked but that would have generated an iCloud email which would have pushed to your device which also would have changed the screen.  iOS updates do not create a passcode.

Here's the thing... The longest you can set an iphone to wait before requiring a passcode to unlock the phone is 4 hours. Passcodes also will not create themselves, unless something is way wrong. So assuming there was one created by you, and assuming you sleep occasionally for more than 4 hours, you should have run into this password issue before. This doesn't add up.

So let's just give you the benefit of the doubt here, and say this is indeed your phone, and somehow the wacky computer gods gave your iphone a passcode during the update. Well... I would hope that you've had iCloud activated this whole time. Its a very important feature! Makes it so your iPhone backs up automatically on a regular basis.

So you don't really need to worry about losing all of your information if so. You just do your factory data reset and when the setup screen comes up, elect to restore from an iCloud backup.

If you haven't been backing up to iCloud, ...well, naturally there is no way around the passcode. If there were, then there would be no point in having a passcode.
