Name not showing in text messages

I just recently got my iphone 4s late december and my aunt asked if i wanted her to set up my phone and i said yes because this is the first time ive had an iphone on verizon. When i text other people with their name it shows up with their name but when they text back it only shows their number. Caller ID works just fine though.

e.g Text Bob blah blah blah

receive: 7141239876

this is very annoying ...is there a solution to this, ive been looking around online for solutions but none of them seem to work.
ive tried:

Turning off my phone, turning it back on

dialing *288 & pressing 1 & 2 but it said it failed to upgrade

Dialing *288 & turning off my phone & turning it back on

Added +1 to all my contacts, +1 (714) 123-1234

my international language is on english

ive sync my phone to icloud

Remove the + 1 to all the contacts?

On the Verizon Wireless network you should use just the ten digit phone number.

i can't i tried then my phone numbers would be like
(71)4 45 43 23 1

Huh?

The numbers would look like (714) 555-1234 for USA phone numbers.

it would show up like this:

until i entered the full number which displayed as a regular USA #

but when i text people i would receive their # instead of name

I see this is becoming very annoying, and I would like to help.

First, thanks to Ann154 for the great feedback & suggestions!  brian huynh, I would like to suggest turning off International Assist to correct this problem.  Go into Settings > Phone > International Assist (Turn OFF) > return to the Home Screen and double-tap the "home button" to clear app manager > power cycle the device.  Once the device is back on perform an over-the-air programming by dialing *228 option 1.  This should resolve the text message issue for you.

I dialed *228 and used option 1 to reset phone. Then double click home button to kill all your apps and wait a couple minutes, solved it for me! Good luck...
