Spacebar double tap function has been disabled

Has anyone had an issue where the spacebar double tap function (adding a period at the end of a sentence) stopped working? I accidentally locked my screen in the landscape view while in messaging last night. Now that I have unlocked it the space bar function no longer works. I have tried doing a hard reset but that did nothing. Am I missing a setting somewhere? I've gone through all my settings and can find nothing that affects this function. 

Any help is greatly appreciated.
