A friend just sent me a text and it went to another phone (both iPhone 4) on my family plan. This happened a couple times when I upgraded to IOS 5 and now I'm on 6. It could prove quite embarrassing.
Anyone else have this problem???

Is your phone and the other phone in your family plan sharing the same Apple ID? Was the message sent as an iMessage?

Yes, both phones are on the same Apple ID. The message was sent by someone with an iPhone, but it was sent to my phone number, not my Apple ID... It's someone who has probably sent me hundreds of texts over the years without this happening.
I do occasionally get a text on my iPad, which I figure must be related to iMessage and Apple, but there must be some way to ensure privacy other than breaking up the family plans?

You don't need to split the family plan. Just use a different Apple ID for each phone.

That's even worse than splitting the family plan.
I don't understand why a text sent to a specific cell # would go to another. And why it only happens once in a while. I'm trying to figure out if it's an Apple issue or a Verizon issue. I don't want to spend hours on an annoying customer service call with the wrong one.

Verizon always says iMessage is a third party app trying blame all on apple when I send one it sometimes still sends as text even with the block on from apple. I have multiple things with same I'd don't have your problem but have this occasional text charge that should be iMessage. Always adds alittle to the bill.
If it happens it results Verizon could be doing it but the phone part at fault takes hrs to go back and fourth. Customer service vzw doesent want me to go to vzw tech just send me to apple is what they do. Be prepared.

Hi kdenise,
I don't want you to find yourself in an embarrassing situation with someone else receiving your text messages. You can get on http://support.verizonwireless.com/clc/devices/knowledge_base.html?id=63089 to get the details on the difference on iMessage and SMS. As iMessage requires an active mobile number to work on the iPhone, the person may have sent it via iMessage without noticing. The only way to stop and avoid this will be to separate Apple ID's or to turn off iMessage.
Thank you,
