Traveling outside of U.S. , how do I avoid roaming fees?

In two weeks I will be traveling outside of U.S. and have heard all the horror stories about unexpected roaming fees. I will only use the phone in an emergency situation only, otherwise the only other use would be to take pictures and to use the free WiFi  in our hotel. I have heard placing the phone in airplane mode will disable everything, but you can still hookup to WiFi.

Is this information correct? Also will the airplane mode restrict all incoming texts, phone calls and push notifications or do I need to disable other functions also?

You can place the phone in airplane mode and then just activate wifi. This should block all phone/cellular data communications.
