What do I have to do to activate my phone in the UK for making and receiving calls and email. No texting. What is the cost?

4 or 4s?   The 4 is CDMA only so won't work on the UK's GSM networks.  You will be able to get email if you connect to a Wifi network.  You can then use skype or similar tools, but you won't be able to get or make calls using the normal phone networks.

What about a global plan? Use wifi too.even if you have the 4s you still need a us service plus it unlocked plus a global card.

Yes, with a 4s, still use wifi to save data, but generally if you are there for any length of time, get the phone unlocked (before you go) and you can get a local SIM, where all rates, (calls, texts and data) are much much cheaper (as I commented in another thread, UK-US calls as little as 8c per min, whereas VZ charges 99c with a monthly charge, $1.29 without, incoming calls are free, and you can get data for 60c per 100MB, compared to VZ's $25 for 100MB)

But if the price doesn't matter so much, and the stay is short, and/or you REALLY need to keep your US number reachable, getting the global plan from VZ might make sense.

My daughter has the 4 CDMA. We know it won't work for phone calls, but she wants to use it for wifi. What does she need to do for that to work?

tell her to by an tablet or ipod touch and leave the phone home.

its just too risky cost wise to take one overseas unless your prepared to pay if you accidently use it there

Re using for Wifi: that's just like connecting to a wifi network in the US.   There is no difference.  In some places, such as hotels, there may be a daily charge to connect to Wifi, in others, such as coffee shops, there often isn't.

Re mdram4x4 comment:  there are often cases where a phone would be good, such as calling when you arrive back in the US etc, but there is a risk.  Try turning cellular data off from the settings menu, this still allows Wifi

To silver5056: no risk of accidental calls due to lack of sim card in the 4s, therefore no way to replace it with a compatible one. we're in a London hotel with free wifi, and cannot get the 4s to connect. Any ideas?

Oh right, mdram4x4's comment is more applicable to either the 4s (or in general world phones) or travelling in the handful of countries that use CDMA.

What is happening when you try to connect?  Does the iphone show a connection.  Many London hotels (and elsewhere) require a confirmation step where you need to use the phone browser to accept terms and conditions etc.  (Trying to go to any site will bring up this page, but before doing this, everything else, like email, fails)

Do you have any devices (such as laptop, internet-enabled phone) that can try to connect?
