Quick question.. I got my phone unlocked by the global service rep.. since I will be gone a minimum 5 months, can I suspend my line so I'm not paying $80 a month... or is that not considered an 'active' line?
Referring to the bold on this list:
* Must be a Verizon Wireless customer.
* The iPhone 4S being unlocked must be active on a Verizon Wireless line of service.
* The line of service must be active at least 60 days.
* The line of service must be in good standing for the past 60 days.
* Only one SIM Unlock per line every 10 months.

Hi there Hfreed1!
First, I hope you have safe travels! As your phone is already unlocked, you are able to suspend your services while you're abroad.
Here are some FAQs regarding suspension: http://support.verizonwireless.com/clc/faqs/My Verizon/suspend_service.html
Let us know if you have any other questions!
Thanks,

Hi, is there anyway you can help me? Anytime i call the number to have my sim unlocked the person has no idea what im talking about. I explain everything and then they don't know how to help me and try to transfer me. One told me that i should just take my phone to whichever company i go with when I'm out of the country and that they will do everything but I dont believe that because then she tried to transfer me.

Hi,
I am currently living overseas in Poland (from the US) and have been living here since late July and will be there till April 22nd playing volleyball professionally. My team gave me this tragic tragic square brick phone that I can use to call my team or get updated on practices times It is so ancient, so the minute I heard about unlocking my phone and not having to carry around 2 phones I had to find out more. I have been reading the thread and I have some questions:
1. I checked and I have no sim card in phone Iphone4s slot. Do I need that before I can exchange it with a local card?
2. Would I still have the same US number while under this sim card?
3. There would be charges if I were to call a US number from iPhonse suing the sim card.
..ok I think that is it thanks for the help in advance.

1) The phone needs to be unlocked, but I don't think you need an existing SIM
2) A local card will have its own number, so you would not retain your own. If you can get a Verizon (Vodafone) SIM for the 4s, that can have your normal US number (the one advantage of not using a local SIM)
3) Yes, if you are using the local SIM, you will be charged a call to the US. If you used the Verizon SIM you would also be charged because you are outside the US. WIth a local SIM, the charge is likely to be a lot less. In some places, not sure about Poland, incoming calls will be free to you.

Thank you for the great reply.
So if my mom can mail me a Vodafone sim card I will be able to retain my own number, still make calls locally in Poland? Right now I am only receiving iMessages along with using other messaging apps. With this would I be able to receive texts from the US and non iphone users free of charge?

Your mother will need to talk to Verizon, it's not any Vodafone SIM, they need to attach it to your US phone number, but this is usually no problem. I have heard reps claim that the activation of the (Vodafone) SIM has to take place with the phone in the US but I don't know if that is really true.
Unfortunately, with the Vodafone SIM, international texts are still charged, Verizon plans don't cover the case where the phone is outside the US. Here are the rates: (see http://businessportals.verizonwireless.com/international/traveling_to/Europe/Poland.html
)
GSM Value Plan Roaming Per Minute Rate: $2.29 Text Messaging Rates
$0.50/address sent
$0.05/message received
Picture and Video Messaging
Picture and Video Messaging Rates
$0.50/address sent
$0.25/message received
So texts are just OK, phone calls are amazingly expensive (the value plan is when you pay $5 a month to get cheaper calls) On top of that, this doesn't cover data, Verizon sells these for something like $25 for 100MB per month.
Local SIMs are usually much better, but you would need to communicate your new number.

If you have a Vodafone SIM card, you would be using their number. As for
receiving text messages free of charge, that would strictly depend on the
carrier that you went with, and what their rates are
