Thank you SGMD1 for your input regarding the Verizon iPhone 4S SIM unlock procedure. You are correct, we will unlock the SIM for the iPhone 4S as long as the qualifications are met as you stated in your post.

No problem...although I realized afterwards that the Verizon unlock procedure is different than a factory unlock...so the iTunes unlock confirmation screen won't show up. AFAIK, inserting a foreign SIM is the only way to verify that the unlock is successful.

It won't let me edit the first post any more so I can't change this. Would you be able to?

I called Verizon yesterday and they "unlocked" my iphone 4s.  I tried to put in my ATT sim card and I got an error message on my iphone stating that this sim does not work with my phone.  So my question is, how do I know that my phone is indeed unlocked?  Last thing I want is to go to Canada next week and find that my phone is not unlocked.  I'd like to get some form of verification before I leave the states...  Anyone else know?

global support person told me that it would NOT work with an at&t sim ... though the first ones that i spoke with told me that it would .. i DO know that so far it's certainly not working with my at&t sim.

Have you already unlocked your phone gerelee?

at this point i don't know ... the only sim that i have to try it with is my at&t one ... haven't tried it today at this point i'm pretty sure it WON'T work with an at&t sim .. though by all rights, it should. i guess their idea of unlocked is different than mine, lol.

All I can say is that Verizon states that they will unlock the phone if you meet the conditions. This does not, however, unlock it so that you can use domestic sim cards in the phone, only foreign sim cards.

As to whether or not YOUR phone is actually unlocked, you will only be able to find out by trying. Other people in this thread have said it does work for them. Just because it has worked for other people, doesn't mean that the person performing the unlock on your phone did it correctly, or that they even completed the process. You can only find out by actually seeing if it is unlocked by using a different SIM card.

Keep in mind, though, that while in Canada, your phone has the capability to use CDMA signals to make/receive calls. This will be counted as roaming charges while in Canada, so if you want to use a Canadian SIM to complete calls instead of roaming on CDMA while in Canada, just make sure that your phone is set to GSM only.

How do you use GSM only?  i looked all over the settings menus and didn't find such an option.

Also, anyone have a Canadian sim I can use to see if my phone is unlocked?

Yes, looks like the concept of unlocking a Verizon World phone varies by phone model!   From what I've seen here and elsewhere, it looks like there are at least three different behaviors:

1) Carrier lock: example Moto Droid 2 Global/Moto Droid 3.   GSM bands are locked in the US and cannot be used with any SIM, US or foreign.

2) No 3G: e.g. HTC Droid Incredible 2, some blackberries: phones will work with GSM in the US but lack the US 3G bands for AT&T (and T-mobile) so 2G only on GSM.  I've only tried this with a foreign SIM, do these work with US SIMs?  But still no 3G!

3) "SIM lock"  (bad phrase at it means something else!) iPhone 4S.   Phone will work on 3G in the US if using a foreign SIM (with large roaming rates in many cases) but "local" AT&T and T-mobile SIMs will not work.

No, you just need to call Verizon as it explains in the 1st post in this thread.

You only need the foreign sim to use it internationally on a GSM network AFTER it is unlocked.

Verizon seems to be having a problem getting the unlock information to Apple at the moment. If your iPhone says "Pending Unlock" in Verizon's computers the unlock has NOT gone thru it needs to show "completed" or "unlocked." it works for some iPhone 4S but not for others. They seem to be working on it. Calling Apple won't get you anywhere as it appears all unlock requests must go thru this system.
