Verizon not roaming on Golden State

I live in the foothills at the moment. I got my Verizon phone activated and when I'm in a Verizon area, I get good service and I am able to make and receive calls and texts. However, when I came back home, in the extended network area, which is Golden State, I try to call and it rings once then a message says that my phone number isn't recognized/authorized. I've been talking to Verizon for almost 2 days, they can't figure it out, but they're still trying. I contacted Golden State and they pretty much blamed it on Verizon, when I don't see how it's Verizon's problem, it must be Golden State. I am thinking about driving to a Verizon service area to dial *228 and select option 2, in order to update roaming. Do you think it'll work? I don't think it will, but it's the only thing left I have to try. Any other suggestions?
