My wife got an iPhone 4S. She used to have a LG phone and this is her first iPhone. She hasn't set up voicemail. If I call and she doesn't answer and it goes to voicemail you don't hear her old voicemail announcement but some female voice telling you to select a message mailbox. If I tap the voicemail icon at the bottom of her screen it dials voicemail and says to enter the number of the person you want or hit # for your own voicemail. I tap # and it asks what mailbox number???? I looked at the directions on this site and there are 3 steps, simple eh? Well they don't apply. Any help greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
jek

@ DaisyP, not sure if this was part of the solution. We went to the VerizonWireless store in Plymouth Ma and one of the sales professionals there knew what to do. It did involve activation but I believe he started with re-activating or provisioning the phone from scratch. He worked on it for quite a while but when he was done he had to the point where my wife could now create her greeting again and that would finish the process. My best advice is to go into a full company VerizonWireless outlet, one that can deal with your plan and everything. There you should find the expertise needed.

Go to call then there is a tab for voicemail then u go to freeing. It asks u what kind of greeting u want then u type in ur password. That's so u can see the voicemail on ur screen so u don't have to spend minutes on it. Maybe I did it different then u. I thought it was easy. Are u trying to have ur voicemail be seen or are u doing it through the automated. I hope I could help u.

If u switch from one type of voicemail to another or one phone to a different type of phone u need a new greeting so that's why u didn't hear a familer voice.

I will try again to reply, so far clicking Comment does not work . When I tap the phone icon then the voice-mail tab the keypad comes up and a "Welcome to the message management center, please enter the number of the person you wish to leave a message" is heard. Then she says "Please tap pound if you want your own mail-box". Tapping pound gets "Please enter your mailbox number". I see no freeing button or tab or anything. Thanks for trying to help.

I am having the same problem. I went from the LG Ally to the iphone 4S and I getting the same message when I try to setup my voicemail. I took the phone back to the Verizon retailer on Thursday to have them fix the issue and they ended up calling Verizon's customer service because they couldn't figure out the problem. Well, Verizon's customer service was no help either. They told the retailer that there was a problem with the system but couldn't tell them what it was. They also said that it was affecting all providers of the iPhones not just Verizon. I have tried contacting customer service myself but have had no luck getting an answer from them on how long the voicemail is going to be down. I also couldn't get an answer on whether this was affecting just new users of the phone or all users. I have been with Verizon for a very long time and I have NEVER experienced such poor customer service.

Thanks for the info JRG. My wife is going to go into Verizon Wireless here, we have a full service store here. I am hoping they will have more information. If nothing else we should get a reduction on the monthly bill if we have no voice-mail service.

Thank you all for your replies.
Hello jek,
Thanks for posting. All new iPhone users must activate their Voice Mail Box to begin receiving Voice Mails even if Voice Mail was activated on their previous device. Please visit this link for instructions on how to set up your Voice Mail. Let us know if you experience difficulties once these steps are completed.
