iphone constantly drops my plantronics bluetooth connection @ random
I wouldn't say at random, but the iPhone and plantronics headset do tend to have an inconsistant fringe area, I never have a problem when I have the iPhone close by me though
I am not sure about the model you have, but my plantronics headset will give me audible cues when it disconnects and reconnects, the distance varies though, as like I said, it's inconsistant

I would be concerned too, if my handset was losing the connection with my bluetooth headset. What specific make and model headset do you have? I recommend testing the iPhone 4 with an alternate bluetooth device to determine if it may be an issue with the headset and not the phone itself.
Additionally, you could unpair your bluetooth headset and turn your bluetooth feature off and then reconnect it to see if it will make the connection more consistent. I have attached a link below for your reference.
