cant unlock phone

is anyone else having problems unlocking there phone?  i dont have any damage to the phone but the only button that works is the home key. i cant slide to unlock the phone.  i went to verizon today for help and they told me to call apple. does that make any sense? i cant open my phone but i have to call apple for help.  obviously verizon employs the stupid and lazy.

Press home power and volume or just home and power. Restart it.
