help with iphone 4s imessaging?

i just got the iphone 4s 16 gb today.

i am wondering what is the difference between imessage, sms, and mms.

i have a plan of 700 mins, 500 texts, and 2gb of data per month. (on verizon)

i know that i message is blue and sms is green but if i message someone who has an iphone 3 and i am at home and use wifi instead of 3g, does it count towards my texts or data? and if its data what does that mean? does it mean it counts towards my 2 gb of data even if im on wifi? or is it completely free?

also i heard imessage is free to iphone users who both have IOS5. does that mean if i message my friend who has an iphone 3 its not free?

who ever is familiar with messaging/data on the iphone PLEASE HELP. THANKS!

Ok, iMessage is Apple's verzion of BlackBerry Messenger so to speak. It's a messaging system for iOS devices that have iOS 5 and have the feature activated to allow iOS devices to send messages to each other without incurring text messaging fees. iMessage will work regardless if you are using wifi or 3G service as long as both parties have the feature on (and obviously they both need to have iOS 5 or higher). Exceptions would cause a message to be sent as a text versus iMessage but this can be avoided by turning off that option in settings. SMS is regular text messaging (traditionally 160 characters or less but longer messages can be sent on the iPhone and may be delivered to the receipient in several smaller messages or as a mms message depending on their device and/or carrier). MMS would be multimedia messages (picture messages, video messages).  As far as iMessage using data...I believe it uses a small amount of data but nothing that would cause a significant hit to your data plan if you are on the tiered plans versus if you have the old unlimited plan. Maybe someone will chime in on this. If you are using wifi at the time that you send a message then it will not use any of your data plan because you will be connected to your wifi connection.

If you text an iPhone friend that has an older iPhone that does not support iOS 5 (I assume that since you asked this you already verified that your friend does not have iOS 5 and does not have the iMessage feature) then any messages you send to them will be sms or mms (and vice versa). Hope that helps a little.

just a FYi all iphones can get imessage(just plug it into itunes and upgrade then go into settings etc) if you use 3G for imessage it will be used as data BUT it will be very very miinimal.... using it over wifi wont add to your data

Not all iPhones can get iMessage only ones running iOS 5 or higher and the iPhone 3 only runs 4.3 or something and cannot therefore iMessage
