I purchased a global data plan for my iPhone 4s before leaving for the Netherlands. After arriving I found I have no service. I am not able to call Verizon and their web site did not provide any useful information (or contact information).
any help would be most appreciated!

Try the contact information on http://www.verizonwireless.com/wcms/global/support.html
I'm most definitely NOT a VZW employee. If a post answered your question, please mark it as the answer.

It provides contact information for global tech support for both if you're calling from your cell phone or calling from a landline, both options free of charge... what useful information were you looking for...?

Can you get access to a landline? There's instructions for calling from a landline as well using a calling card provided by verizon wireless to prevent any international charges from the landline.

access to a landline is difficult .... I have to find one and then
coordinate a time I can call the US (and hope I am not on hold for 30
minutes, a common experience when I call Verizon).
I am on vacation, I pay a high price to Verizon because I expect quility
service from Verizon. I do not expect my vacation to be spent
resolving/discussing NO SERVICE from Verizon.

Im sorry youre in this situation. Aside from making sure the feature is turned on in your settings, and you dont want to take the time to get it resolved, youre pretty much stuck. When you return to the US, request a refund for the plan. In the meantime purchase a cheap prepay phone there and you can activate call forwarding from your number to the temporary number via my verizon.
Best Wishes
