why am i not receiving text messages from friends with at&t ?
Does he have an iPhone? If so is he registered to imessages? If so are you?

I realize the importance of sending and receiving text messages and I am hopeful your issue has been resolved since the original date of your post! If not, I can happily assist you. Are you using iMessage or standard messaging? Is the issue with once particular contact or several? If using iMessage ensure the feature is enabled: Settings>Messages>iMessage switch on.
