You need the original owner to remove it from their iCloud account. Otherwise you won't be able to activate it. The original owner can retrieve their password by logging into their My Apple ID account https://iforgot.apple.com/password/verify/appleid#!&section=password

If you're saying you forgot the passcode then look at this https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204306

That is some great information Kaebfly. I want to help as much as I can MISSCUBE. What password are you referring too? Were you able to try out Kaebfly suggestion? Did you get this from a friend or family member?

I received the phone from Verizon.  When I called verizone, the technicians didn't seem familiar with the passcode request on a new phone. They suggested I contact the local apple store. I ask them to please send me another phone and let me return that phone to them which they agreed to do . I have not received it yet, but expect it any day.  I appreciate the help from Verizon, but did have to spend approximately 3-4 hours on the phone trying to solve the problem.

IT seems you were sold a used iPhone with an Apple ID and iCloud lock already in place.

THe icloud lock is important for you to activate on your new phone when it arrives, and must be removed by you before you sell or give away the phone.  It make the phone harder to steal and use by another person.

Only the owner can remove the Apple ID, Apple will not do it, Verizon cannot do it.
