Recently my iPhone 5 has been sending most ( but not all ) calls directly to voicemail.   After doing some internet searching, this has been a frequent, recurring Verizon problem for years.  Any recent new solutions?   I did *73, turned off the cellular data when I'm not using it.  I'm getting at least three bars.  I'm in rural central Georgia.

This happens when your phone receives 1x and no 3G or LTE. We are having the same issue.
