Can I swap iPhone Devices repeatedly?

I use my existing iPhone 4 while cycling as my GPS and cycling computer.  I have a bike mount specifically for the form factor of the iPhone 4.

I am looking at upgrading to a larger iPhone 5S this fall, but I would like to be able to continue to use my iPhone 4 for cycling.  Both devices would be Verizon provided.

Is it possible/feasible to repeatedly switch the device assigned to my service plan to the iPhone 4 while cycling and then back to a iPhone 5S otherwise?  How long does it take for the service to be reassigned to the other device?  If I do this a lot, is there a fee for doing so, or a limit to the number of times that an account is allowed to be reassigned?

Thank you for reaching out to us, TimTurner. We can help out with this! You may not even need to swap out phones actually! GPS services should still work with your 4s, even if you do not have service running on it. Depending on your VZW package plan, you may have mobile hotspot services with your 5s. If this is the case, just connect your 4s through WiFi, from the signal being broadcast by the mobile hotspot/5s, to keep your phone connected to the net while riding. Then disconnect it once you've synced your info.

Part of the point is to enable NOT bringing the iPhone 5S along for the ride while cycling.

The iPhone 4 would need to have access to a data plan while riding in order to update the maps and to get faster, more accurate GPS readings from AGPS.

This response gave a different option (which won't work for me), but didn't address the original questions as to whether I can switch my service back and forth between two devices repeatedly.

I don't know about the Apple version of Google Maps, but on the Android version you can download local maps prior to use and you don't need to have a data connection.  Maybe this is also possible on Apple.  Just a thought...

Thanks, but my understanding is that without network connectivity (either via wifi or an active data plan) that the GPS performance would be unacceptable to work for tracking my speed and position.

I understand, TimTurner. Some apps use a combination of data sync/tower location to help with GPS tracking to improve accuracy. If swapping back and forth between the two phones is the ideal solution, it definitely is possible. Use this link: http://bit.ly/VylkLd to swap between your phones. It should have both devices saved via your My Verizon. Just pick and choose the phone you prefer to activate at that time, and you should have no problem going back and forth between the two. Both utilize the same plan that you are currently on. The only difference is that one phone works with a SIM card, the other one does not.

Let us know if you have any additional questions. Thank you, and happy riding!
