Get Iphone 4 Now or Wait Until Iphone 5?

So, I finally found out that the Iphone 4 will be available for Verizon employees and their families this Tuesday, so I have to make this choice.  What should I do? This is probably my last phone through my remaining years at college, and it's actually a big decision for me.  Obviously, I'm trying to figure out if the Iphone 5 will come up in a mere few months or if it will be coming much later in the year (in which case, I would not want to wait, and I would probably have to wait an extra couple months because of the employee thing), and also if the changes in it would be groundbreaking enough to even wait for it.  Also, I am worried I would not be able to get the unlimited data plan since apparantly it's temporary and I use alot of data.  Thanks for any help!

Use you upgrade for a CPO fascinate and have a better device for $50 bucks IMO

 

If the Iphone5 does follow suit you still won't be able to get it at launch..

Based on your criteria, I would recommend buying now because (IMO) the iphone5 will not be coming to VZW until 2012. 

 

Plus the iphone5 (or whatever is will be called) is rumored to be a minor upgrade only so you would not be gaining much technologywise.

It hasn't been confirmed anywhere that the iphone won't launch simultaneously on both carriers. So that 2012 seems a bit much.

 

As far as it being only a minor upgrade..look at the ipad2, apple users just want whats new no matter how minor the change

I've heard also that the iPhone 5 (or whatever Apple calls it) will also not an earth shattering upgrade.  It won't be 4G/LTE (I'll put money on this) but it may have a slightly larger screen and likely the A5 processor that the iPad 2 has.  But overall it won't be that dramatically different from the iPhone 4.  I do think that Verizon will get it when ATT gets it and when that happens the iP4's price will drop to $99.00 (w/contract) on both carriers.  HOPEFULLY by summer all iPhones will be running the same iOS of which it is very possible that a major update to this will occur simulataneously with the release of a new iPhone.  So I'm betting that this year will be a down year in terms of hardware.  The big one will be in the summer of 2012 when the 1st 4G/LTE iPhone will be released.  So now's a good as time as ever to just go ahead and buy an iphone... well in my opinion.  And again remember that nobody knows for sure what Apple is going to do, so it's always a gamble.  Good luck.

 

As for the unlimited data plan... well you're right, that alone may be a good reason to lock in a contract now with the ip4 because I'll bet that when the iPhone 5 is released, it won't be eligible for an unlimited plan.   Ultimately everything with every carrier will be tiered... (well at least for the time being.... maybe if the competition heats up some more, we may start seeing unlimited plans again!)

Yeah, I was just looking for opinions.  But yeah, since I will need a new phone again in 2 years, seems logical to wait for a bigger upgrade.

Yeah... but don't get caught in that 'always waiting for the latest technology trap'  as there's always something better in the wings and you really can never keep completely up with it.   As I said earlier, the big one is whether or not the unlimited data plan will still be availble by the time the next iphone is released (regardless of whether VZW even gets it in the summer).  If you're a heavy data user, then it might be worth while to lock into a 2 year contract with an ip4 now as by summer it's highly likely that VZW will be dumping unlimited plans in favor of tiered plans for new contracts or upgrades!  Again this is all speculation.  Anything is possible and nobody knows for sure!  Good luck.
