I have seen a lot of other Apple users asking if the phone's software is up to date as a first step.
Not having service is one of those things that is very limited in what you can do on your own. The step you took as well as what Snn5 suggested are... pretty much it, other than making sure you paid the bill, lol. This will probably require a call in to customer care for network troubleshooting and/or perhaps a trip up to the store for a new sim.
So just to clarify, no signal dots, cannot place calls or recieve calls, cannot send or recieve texts, and cant get any data without wifi?
