If I buy an Verizon iPhone 5 from radio shack, can I just activate myself?

I plan on getting an 16GB VZW iPhone 5 tomorrow from radioshack and I prefer to activate the phone myself when I get home so that I can back up everything from wifi, is this possible (and also I have heard some radio shack horror stories when it comes to activation? I know that I will gave to call VZW and set a new data plan since I am currently grandfathered in on the unlimited plan. Has anyone ever done this?

If you plan to do this yourself, then it will be best to call..

since you have unlimited data, i highly recommend going to an Verizon Retail Store, a 1-1 conversation is better than a phone convo.
